One Stitch

Some people wonder why, when I am so focused on working efficiently, that I hand hem my textiles.

I would have to clear off my work table, at which I stand to work, dig the sewing machine out from storage, find multiple bobbins for all the different colours of thread to sew with, could not use the table for anything else until I put it all away again.

Sewing by hand makes the task portable.  I can sit comfortably in front of the tv and have hand work to do while relaxing in the evenings, take to work on while visiting, even bring it with me while on holiday so that I can relax while not feeling like a slug doing nothing.  ;)

The other reason is that I just prefer how the towels look.

Here is a photo of some of the towels I have so far sewn during the trip.   They still need their final press but that will wait until I'm back home.

I'm going to have to re-learn how to do the hem stitch so I can repair the tea towels I got from you a few years ago. :) The towels are still almost like new except for a little bit of the hemming coming undone!

I like watching the boob tube and doing finishing tasks on my woven items. I am a fan of my battery operated fringe twister. It saves my fingers and doesn't make more than a whirr when I use it. It is surprising how much you can get done. A lot of times just listening to music is better, no visual distraction. Speaking of which, my string orchestra voted to have our regular rehearsal during the Super Bowl.

Laura - saw the photo of your hand woven cloth on Fibres West website. Would you mind sharing your source for those beautifully colored yarns?

Thank you

Always ALWAYS hand stitch hems ... unless you are making Halloween costumes and they really don't count.
The finish is so much better.

I hand-bind all my quilts - well, I hand-quilt them too - but the point is, if it's worth doing, it's worth doing well.

Thank you for confirming I'm not a total nutcase (yes, the suggestion has been made). :)
